KRAchievers Support Relay For Life

Headed by Team Captain, Andrea Burfoot, KRA Career Agent Team Leader, and Co-Captain, Marcus Anthony, KRA Career Agent, the KRAchievers* from KRA’s Norfolk VIEW (Virginia Initiative for Employment not Welfare) Program raised just-shy-of $600 for the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Relay For Life campaign, which celebrates the lives of people who have battled cancer, remembers loved ones lost, and fights back against the disease.  The KRAchievers have been active in ACS fundraising for many years, and this year have already held other successful events: a Benefit Concert in March with the band Soulon, and an Applebee’s “Dining to Donate” event in April, where 20 percent of the proceeds went to ACS.  However, the most popular event to date has been their Annual Relay For Life Cookout. Usually a once-a-year event, the demand was so great…especially among the employees of the Norfolk Department of Human Services, KRA’s client…that two cookouts were held, one on April 19 and another on May 31.

Burfoot reported, “Both cookouts were huge successes! On an ‘a la carte’ or combo basis, we sold hamburgers, hotdogs, and sausages, as well as chips, drinks, and slices of cake…all of which were donated by KRAchievers members.  This was totally a team effort: Mr. Thomas, owner of the neighboring Variety Printing, let us use the area in the front of his building to hold the cookouts; Mr. [Frederick] Smith, one of our KRA Lead Instructors, supplied us with the grill; and Mr. Chandler, father of Ms. [Ninette] Adams-Terry, one of our KRA Employment Specialists, provided the tables!  I want to say ‘thank you’ to everyone who contributed to the success of these events.”
