From Doubt to Determination: Jamae’s Journey to a New Career in Healthcare

When she enrolled in the WIOA Adult Program at the KRA Rancho Dominguez American Job Center of California in May 2026, Jamae was ready to transition from her work as an in-home caretaker for a relative—with an Uber gig to help make ends meet—to find more than another job, to prepare herself for a career.

However, she did have doubts about whether she could support herself while pursuing training in a new field. Like many unemployed or under-employed jobseekers, Jamae knew she would face financial challenges, i.e., paying her bills and supporting herself if she attempted to undertake occupational-skills training (OST).

She had always been passionate about helping others, and despite her doubts, with the guidance of Kailyin Perry, her Career Coach, began exploring career pathways that aligned with her strengths and interests. Together, they identified Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training as an ideal fit that was in high demand in the Healthcare industry. CNA offered a career path in a profession centered on caring for people, something that naturally matched Jamae’s compassionate personality.

She did not have to worry about the cost of an OST program. With Kailyn’s guidance and support, she applied—and was approved—for an Individual Training Account, i.e., WIOA funding that paid for her training with Procareer Academy, an approved Eligible Training Provider.

Working with Kailyin to develop a realistic budget and timeline, and with support from her significant other and personal savings, Jamae was able to stay focused on her goal and successfully complete the program.

Today, she is thriving as a full-time CNA at The Earlwood Center,  working 40 hours/week, earning $22/hour, and enjoying herself in a career she sees as the beginning of a long-term future with advanced training.

We congratulate Jamae on her achievement, which is a powerful reminder that with determination, support, and the right resources, it is possible to overcome doubt and other obstacles to build a brighter future.
