A KRA Journey: From Customer to Career Agent

KRA operates the PGWorks Employment and Training Program—for the Prince George’s County Department of Social Services—for jobseekers applying for, or already receiving, TANF/TCA benefits. PGWorks offers a wide range of workforce-development services, including unpaid Community Work Experience (CWE) opportunities with local private- and public-sector organizations.

Javada - blue (002)For Javada Murphy, CWE became an integral career-building resource, as she reports, “For 11 months, I volunteered with KRA, as my assigned CWE site, providing administrative support to staff, as well as training support, in computer and mobile-device skills, for jobseekers challenged by technical-skill barriers to employment.

Preparing for a Computer Science career, I had completed training in Computer Networking and Help Desk Services. However, through KRA, I learned something about myself…that helping others was mutually gratifying…and decided to expand my career goal to one in which I could maximize both my ‘technical’ expertise, as well as my ‘people’ skills.

For personal reasons, I left PGWorks in 2016, and when I returned 2 months ago, KRA had an opening for a Career Agent! Encouraged by staff, I applied and interviewed for the position, and got the job!  I am super excited to be a member of the KRA family, and believe that my experience as a former customer will keep me grounded as I assist others in realizing their career objectives.”
