Recently, KRA staff from the San Diego Metro Region Career Centers, operated for the San Diego Workforce Partnership, visited the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego, which each year houses 1,200 family members of critically ill or injured children being treated at local hospitals.
During a tour, staff discovered that every year, a group of Marines donates the entire holiday décor, and volunteers to “deck-the-halls” with beautiful Christmas trees, wreaths, and other sparkling decorations to the delight of all who enter the “home-away-from-home” facility.
KRA staff collected and donated two tubs full of 30+ toys for the children; helped out at lunchtime in the Family Care Center, which serves 125,000 meals to families and others free-of-charge each year; and led a sing-a-long of classic Christmas carols, “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer”, and other children’s favorites.
Sylvia Contreras, Program Manager, commented, “KRA San Diego decided to not only donate toys this year, but to participate in a day-of-service as a team. It was heart-warming to spend time with the children and their families, taking their minds off their worries…if only for a short time. People say ‘it is more blessed to give than to receive’. My personal interpretation is, ‘when we give joy to others, we receive joy at the same time’.”
