KRA Monthly Spotlight!

KRA Non-Profit Partner is a Valued Employer

The WIOA and TANF programs that KRA operates across the country cultivate collaborative partnerships with local employers—businesses and non-profit organizations—essential to the workplace success of our jobseeker-customers.

In Baltimore City, the Work Participation, Placement, and Support Services Program, operated for the BCDSS, requires up to a 3-month Work Experience (WEX) Internship, at the end of which, the intern-jobseeker is either hired by the WEX employer, or given another assignment.

The New Vision House of Hope (NVHOH), an exceptional WEX-site provider, has assisted dozens of KRA jobseekers optimize their employment options, hiring several in the last 2 years, including Latavia Taylor, a single mother of two.

When the BCDSS referred Latavia to KRA, she was studying at All-State Career School for dual Medical Assistant and Phlebotomy Certifications, and upon completion, enrolled at BCCC for an AA in Allied Human Services Addiction Counseling (AHSAC), which required a degree-related externship.

Concerned about handling an internship and externship, she received counseling from Nakia Washington, her Career Agent, and Shawnda Walker, Lead Job Developer/WEX Site Supervisor, who developed the perfect solution, i.e. NVHOH accepted Latavia for a WEX internship that would also satisfy her externship requirement.

In October, Latavia’s outstanding performance—working with clients struggling with addition, post-incarceration adjustment, HIV, and similar challenges—led to an offer of  immediate fulltime employment as a Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program Caregiver, which she could not accept because her externship did not end until November.

Ms. Walker collaborated with NVHOH to extend Latavia’s externship and revise the start date, allowing her to fulfill the BCCC requirement.

This month, she graduated, started the new job, and is currently on track to complete another AA, in Addiction Counseling, with the ultimate career goal of operating her own rehabilitative-services practice.  Considering her demonstrated determination to succeed, KRA has no doubt she will!
