Disability Awareness: Confidence Through Understanding – A KRA EEC Live Learning Event

Last month, KRA’s Employee Engagement Committee (EEC) was ecstatic to bring staff together for a meaningful conversation on inclusion through our recent Live Learning Event, Disability Awareness: Confidence Through Understanding, featuring motivational speaker and accessibility advocate Jonathan Heider Laedtke.

From the moment the session began, Jonathan created an atmosphere that felt less like a presentation and more like a conversation. Drawing from his experiences as a congenital quad amputee, former Paralympic swimmer, professor, and accessibility consultant, he invited staff to examine disability through a lens of understanding rather than assumption. His message was simple but powerful: treat people as people first.

Jonathan challenged common myths about disabilities and reminded us that accessibility is often shaped by small decisions that can have a significant impact on someone’s experience. In addition to the great education Jonathan offered, he provided a place for openness and discussion, leading staff shared personal experiences and lessons learned. Together, participants explored topics such as invisible disabilities, respectful communication, accessibility in digital spaces, and the importance of asking rather than assuming what support someone may need. A wonderful moment occurred when participants reflected on the importance of recognizing that disabilities are not always visible, and that a little empathy can go a long way.

The EEC was proud to provide this opportunity for learning and connection. Events like these strengthen our culture by giving employees a safe space to listen, ask questions, learn from one another and explore new ideas.

Thank you to Jonathan for sharing his expertise, and to all KRA staff who participated, and continue to make KRA a place where everyone feels educated, seen, valued, and supported!
