The U.S. Conference of Mayors Workforce Development Council, of which KRA is a long-standing member, recently hosted a webinar featuring Congressman Jon Porter, previous Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Nevada’s 3rd District, and Jaime Cruz, Executive Director of Workforce Connections in Southern Nevada. The discussion explored what workforce development leaders can expect over the next 4 years as political and legislative changes take shape.
Porter emphasized the incoming administration’s focus on government efficiency, urging workforce leaders to ensure all available funds are effectively utilized. Unused or unencumbered funding will likely face scrutiny, making it essential to show impact and progress.
Programs funded under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act and the Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration may face proposed funding reductions or restructuring. Porter reassured participants that while changes are possible, the legislative process provides time to advocate for these programs and highlight their value.
The conversation also addressed the increasing emphasis on technology and AI development as national priorities. Aligning workforce programs with these emerging areas will help maintain their relevance. By integrating training and resources that address technological advancements, workforce initiatives can attract stronger federal support while preparing individuals for the jobs of the future.
Additionally, Porter highlighted the pivotal role of business partnerships in advancing workforce-development initiatives. Engaging the business community as strategic partners ensures alignment between workforce programs and local economic priorities while amplifying their overall impact.
The discussion made it clear: Over the next 4 years, workforce-development leaders must take a proactive approach. Prioritizing relationship-building with policymakers, showcasing data-driven, measurable outcomes, and collaborating with businesses will be essential to effectively navigating the changes ahead.
