KRA Supports Partner WHRO in Pledge Drive

On April 27, 2012, Kathy Confer and Juanisha Evans, Career Agents, and Uniqua Jones, KRA customer, from the Virginia Initiative for Employment not Welfare (VIEW) Program volunteered their time at the Spring Pledge and Membership Drive for WHRO* Public Television and Radio.  During the Drive, banks of telephones are answered by volunteers in the TV studio to take pledges of financial support from viewers and listeners.  Annually, there are four TV campaigns that require 33 nights of coverage, as well as two FM Radio campaigns that require 28 days and nights of coverage, all provided by volunteers.  WHRO wrapped up the Drive, surpassing their goal, by raising more than $605,000 in 2 weeks!  Volunteering at work sites is an integral part of VIEW’s Job Readiness Academy program, and WHRO has been a consistent partner with KRA in providing opportunities for VIEW Program participants to volunteer at the station as part of their work-readiness activities. Volunteerism is very important to the operation of the station.

Confer reported, “When Uniqua entered the VIEW Program, she was clear about her career goals, and had already enrolled at Old Dominion University to pursue a degree in Journalism.  However, she was in great need of daycare and other supportive services…which KRA was able to provide…to continue her studies.  After Intake and Assessment were complete, I suggested a volunteer position at WHRO where she could learn about the broadcasting business, and have the opportunity to work with Nicole Cleveland, WHRO Annual Giving Manager.  Ms. Cleveland is a published author and publishes a monthly magazine, so they seemed like the perfect match.  Uniqua says she is enjoying her time at WHRO, and is learning new skills every day that she can apply to her studies and career goals.”
