On June 17, 2013, as part of KRA’s 5th Annual Community Care Day Campaign, Jahkesha Abraham, Program Manager, and Evelyn Stanley, Career Agent, KRA Youth Program in the Lower Savannah Region of South Carolina (SC), provided an afternoon of recreational activity for 15 residents of Morningside Assisted Living (Morningside) in Orangeburg, SC.
After learning from Kathy Blackwood, Program Service Director, that Bingo was a favorite activity of the residents, Abraham and Stanley organized a Bingo Bash during Morningside’s activity hour. During the games, the atmosphere was packed with high energy and excitement…and a healthy dose of competition…as the players demonstrated their knowledge and skill of the game. Abraham reported, “We provided small prizes of KRA coffee cups and blanket throws for the winners of each game, which really added to the excitement.”
Stanley commented, “Morningside Assisted Living has operated in Orangeburg for 15 years and is owned by Five Star Senior Living, operators of more than 260 assisted- and independent living communities around the country. Morningside is a valuable community partner, offering specialized healthcare services in assisted-living, memory care, and respite/short term care. Jahkesha and I really enjoyed the time spent with the residents; it brightened our day as much as it did theirs! As we were leaving, they thanked us for hosting the Bingo Bash and for providing the prizes. We’ve decided to continue volunteering with Morningside, and will be organizing more recreational activities that are of interest to the residents.
Blackwood concluded, “I am excited that KRA could take time from their schedule and participate in an afternoon recreational activity with the residents; volunteers are always welcomed and appreciated.”
