Vanessa E. Atterbeary, KRA Corporate Counsel, and Maryland State Delegate, has been appointed by the Speaker of the House to Chair an interim Police Reform and Accountability Workgroup, whose first meeting will be on June 23, 2020.
The formation of the statewide Workgroup results from the recent violence and murder of Blacks at the hands of police officers. Across the country, a heightened awareness of these types of injustices, brought to light by the Black Lives Matter organization, created the need for immediate action addressing the State’s problems and citizen concerns.
The Workgroup will:
- Review policies and procedures related to the investigations of police misconduct, including Maryland’s Law Enforcement Bill of Rights statute;
- Determine the viability of uniform statewide use of force policies and arrest procedures;
- Review the use of body cameras and disclosure of body camera footage; and,
- Identify national best practices of independent prosecution of law-enforcement related crimes.
Delegate Atterbeary, who is also Vice Chair, Judiciary Committee; Chair, Public Safety Subcommittee; and Chair, Howard County House Delegation, commented, “As the mother of three young children, two of whom are boys, issues of police trust and accountability remain in the forefront of my mind each day. The recent tragic events around the country have underscored that we cannot wait another day. We need structural reform ideas from the community and law enforcement to fix this problem in a collaborative way.”
In addition, you can hear Delegate Atterbeary’s views on why police accountability, brutality, and reform are personal to her in a recent video discussion she held with MPT News “Direct Connection”.
We encourage you to watch the Workgroup’s live-streamed meetings when they convene, posted on the Maryland General Assembly Meetings Page.
KRA is proud of the contribution Delegate Atterbeary is making to this critically important issue that is challenging our nation to enforce the unalienable rights of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”, which the Declaration of Independence has given to all humans by our Creator, and which governments are created to protect.
