First Group of KRA/YES Program Participants Graduates

Twelve seniors from Georgetown and Horry Counties, South Carolina, who participated in KRA’s Youth Employability and Success (YES) Program graduated from high school this month…the first class of seniors from the KRA In-School YES Program. KRA staff from both County offices celebrated the students’ accomplishments with separate County graduation-dinner/award celebrations to which each student and one guest was invited. All faces lit up when the students opened their “awards” and discovered a $100.00 gift card and a copy of Life in the Hood, Adulthood 101, by Tina Raheem, Scholarship Director of Foster Care to Success, the largest provider of college funding and support services for foster youth in the nation. After dinner, students spoke about their plans for the Fall.  Of the 12 graduates, nine have definite post-secondary education plans, with six attending various colleges throughout the State.  The other three have decided to obtain certification in the healthcare field, with one already taking Certified Nursing Assistant classes that KRA helped to make possible. KRA staff in attendance at each event included Mary Prince, Program Manager; Patricia Davis, Out-of-School Youth Career Agent; Regina Barth, In-School Youth Career Agent; and Elizabeth Allsbrook, Program Assistant. Prince stated that “Comments from parents and guests were all very positive about the KRA Program, with one proud aunt stating that she had noticed a positive change in her nephew since he started attending KRA/YES workshops. We are proud of the class of 2011, and wish them the very best in their future endeavors.”
