KRA/Reno Organizes Live Job Fair & Career Expo

The American Job Center of Nevada (AJCN) is the hub of the comprehensive Reno-based One Stop Career Center (OSCC) system, operated by KRA for the NevadaWorks WDB collaboratively with an exceptional network of co-located  agencies including Nevada JobConnect, the Nevada DHHS, the Department of Employment, Training & Rehabilitation (DETR), and Truckee Meadows Community College, to name a few. On July 28, 2021, the AJCN hosted a Job Fair & Career Expo at the Reno Town Mall, which was buzzing with excitement generated by 225 jobseekers, numerous OSCC-partners, and 19 of the area’s leading employers…paying a minimum of $17.00 an hour!

In early 2017, William Vinson, homeless and unemployed, “depressed”, and at his “personal rock bottom”, suppressed his innate sense of pride and applied for SNAP benefits through the Prince George’s County Department of Social Services (DSS), for which KRA operates the PGWorks Employment & Training Program. SNAP-participation required enrollment in the Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWD) Program, which included attending KRA Job Readiness Academy (JRA) Workshops.  After completing the required sessions, Mr. Vinson’s appetite for more knowledge was not satisfied; thus, he continued to study, averaging forty-eight 2-hour sessions annually for the next 3 years! Mr. Torre Lewis, 27, applied for TANF-TCA benefits through the Baltimore City Department of Social Services (BCDSS), which required him to enroll in KRA’s Job Readiness Program—a critical component of the Work Participation, Placement, and Support Services Program—prior to occupational-skills training (OST) and/or job-placement. One such OST opportunity is the KRA Knowledge2Career Construction Academy (K2C-CA) co-funded by the BCDSS for TCA customers and the Mayor’s Office of Employment Development for WIOA-eligible Youth jobseekers. KRA customers enrolled in the Work Participation, Placement, and Support Services Program, operated for the Baltimore City Department of Social Services, are required to complete KRA’s Job Readiness Program (JRP) prior to occupational-skills training and/or job-placement opportunities. Prior to March 2020, JRP workshops were conducted in person, classroom-style—not a suitable venue with the onset of pandemic-related physical-distancing requirements. For the Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership, KRA operates both the Westside American Job Center (WAJC) and the Chatham Workforce and Education Center (CWEC), on the Southside.
